BACK FROM NEPAL

We have spent four weeks in Nepal searching for Gareth and the reason for his dissapearance after the 8th March. Despite trekking some 142km over some very difficult terrain we are no nearer to finding out where Gareth is.

We have distributed many posters both in English and Nepalese and we have spoken to many people about Gareth, however no one can remember him after the 8th March.

We have spoken to locals who can remember two English people having an heated argument in the region of Dughla in March. The description given fits Gareth and the person he went out to Nepal with. All the people we have spoken to can not understand why his coleague Ian Napier would abandon him in Nepal and return to the UK a week early without him.

There is a record in a meal order book and an hotel owner in Namche remembers Gareth staying there in February. Unfortunately we have found no other traces of Gareth.

The Police in Nepal had no record of Gareth being missing but Interpol had started a file in March but nothing has been done since then.

We have become increasingly frustrated by the complete lack of concern by the Nepalese authorities in relation to missing persons from abroad. They simply do not see missing persons as their problem.

We have spoken to the Maoist Insurgents regarding Gareth and have been met with understanding and help. They agreed to take our posters and pass the information on to other districts. It is a strange country where you are given more help by so called terrorists than the forces of law and order.

We have no plans to return to Nepal in the near future unless we recieve specific news about Gareth.

Gill and I would like to thank all those people who have given us their support, help and guidance over the last few months. We will continue in our search for Gareth until we have an answer to the questions "Where's Gareth?".

David Koch.

Re: BACK FROM NEPAL

Hi David,

Thanks for this 'general update', and thank you for your e-mail too. I am glad you felt like posting again here.

To keep more people informed and also because of the unbelievable results with both the Nepalese police and Interpol there, I meanwhile copied your update into the missing travellers-thread on Thorn Tree. And I'll also take it to another thread there, that tries to deal specifically with the safety in Nepal for foreign travellers.

I'm sure that in general Gill and you must feel very disappointed that you found no new leads or traces of what Gareth did after that morning of March 8 when he left his lodge in Chukhung. But even more than half a year later, you managed to find locals who remembered "a heated argument", near Dughla...

I'll send you an e-mail later tonight.

David just a question if I may,

While you were out there in Nepal, you have sent several 'updates' to a number of people (all in one 'go', each of those mails).

Can I have your permission to post those general updates on this board?
Because the case of finding out what happened to Gareth and where he can possibly be, isn't over yet (far from it), and your general experiences as described while you were still in Nepal - in my humble opinion - deserve a place on this messageboard.

Please reply to me by e-mail if you like.
Thank you.

22nd September

We have arrived in Nepal

Hi everyone,

Just to let all know that we have finally arrived at our destination after many many many hours of our long and tiring journey.

We are staying at the Kathmandu Guest House which is in the middle of the tourist district and is very very busy and noisy.

We have just had breakfast outside in the cool morning air and we are off to the Embassy today and the loacal Police to see what they have been up to!!

You certainly need a guide for the city as it is very confusing.

We will update you all when we can.

David & Gill.

P.S. They have butterflies the size of birds here. Gill said she saw a big cow I told it was a dog!!

24th September

Still in Kathmandu

Hi All,

Just to update you all on our progress so far.

We should have flown to Lukla today (Friday) but because of bad weather at Lukla we had to spend nearly seven hours waiting at the airport just in case the weather cleared which it did not.

We will have to go back tomorrow and try again; hopefully we will be able to fly.

The weather here is very warm and sunny so we will have to spend some more time in Kathmandu.

We did the tourist bit yesterday seeing all the sights, it was very interesting because we had a special guide who knew lots and lots of interesting facts.

Well that's all for now and if you don't hear from us for a few days it will be because we have finally made our flight.

Kind regards.

David & Gill.

25th September

Second flight cancellation

Flight cancelled yet again. The decision has been taken to take a cab to Jiri and then walk. The walk will take us 5 days.
Perhaps there is a reason for all this and we will find something on that road. The tracker that went out originally was supposed to cover the route but didn't and so we may find something.

We are just going to have some food and wait for another chap to reorganise his arrangements and then we are going to share a minibus (or something similar) and be on our way. It is either hire our own transport and take 5 hours drive or go by bus, sharing with chickens and goats etc and take 9 hours!!

Hopefully this will be the last transmission for at least a week. Speak to you all then.

Love from
Gill and David.

3rd October

We're not celebrities but get us out of here

Dear All,

Well we have finally arrived in Namche after 8 days trekking through some of the most difficult terrain in the whole world (well Nepal anyway).

Had a hot shower and will sleep in a real bed tonight rather than with the goats in the shed.

Saw some lovely sights during the 8 days including leeches snakes and plenty of Yaks.

See you all soon.

Lots of love

David & Gill

10th October

Back in Kathmandu

Hi All

Just a quick one to say that after the hardest thing we have ever done, we are back in Kathmandu.

No real news to tell but we will give you the details when we return.

We have got a few things to do in KTM but if possible we may try and return to the UK earlier than expected.

We will send another email once we have been back to the Embassy and have been in contact with the Nepalese media.

Love to you all

Gill and David.

15th October

Back to the UK

After trying very hard to get an earlier flight home, we find that we cannot get out of here until the 19th October as originally planned. All flights out of KTM are fully booked and so we are stuck here until the bitter end.

Look forward to seeing you all, we have had enough!!!

Love from Gill and David

From an e-mail from David (re: BACK FROM NEPAL)

from an e-mail dated October 18

FINDING THE TRUTH

There is one thing that both Gill and I agree with, which is that no one should ever ever trek alone in Nepal, not because of people attacking you but because there are many inherent dangers in Nepal most of these concern the bad state of the routes you have to traverse (Sheer sided cliffs etc).
